It was 1733 when British General James Oglethorpe set anchor along the sandy shores of the place that would become Savannah, Georgia. Savannah, known as the Hostess City of the South, is situated on the east coast of Georgia between Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida.

The New York Times once called Savannah, Georgia “The 12th Trendy Spot in the World”. Outlook Magazine sees Savannah as “One of the Top 25 Places to Live and Work in the U.S.”. Savannah is often viewed as a place of leisure, adorned with well-established palm trees, azalea bushes and huge live oaks dripping in Spanish moss.

Oglethorpe’s design of Savannah originally featured 24 park-like squares, and twenty-two of those still remain today. The city boasts the nation’s largest urban historic district, which at 2.5 miles attracts much deserved attention. Beyond the district, the landscape stretches toward suburbs, marsh banks and deepwater Savannah real estate, eventually banking the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lying west of downtown are the Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport and the Georgia ports. Industrial, residential and commercial real estate developments support Savannah’s metro area population statistics, which in 2005 numbered just over 312,000 residents.

Summers in Savannah, Georgia, are sultry and winters are mild. This offers a pleasant year-round climate with opportunities to enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities that include freshwater and saltwater fishing, boating and tennis. Golfers have more than twenty public, semi-private and private courses to choose from. Spectator sports fans enjoy events such as the annual Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament and the Savannah Sand Gnats baseball team, a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets.

Savannah’s natural resources such as wetlands, barrier islands and beaches are protected by the various entities that support them. The Historic Savannah Foundation is one of the non-profit organizations that work to preserve the squares, historic buildings, neighborhoods, and other aspects of historic Savannah real estate in the city.

The population of Savannah, GA, is certainly diverse. Perhaps the greatest influence downtown lies with the ongoing influx of 7,000-plus Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students who arrive from every part of the globe to become a part of the upbeat culture of Savannah.

Savannah is home to annual events such as the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the Savannah Music Festival, the SCAD International Festival, Oktoberfest and the Savannah Film Festival. Additionally, tours of Savannah real estate, monthly River Street and City Market events and the Greek and Jewish festivals add color to the Savannah area calendar. //
